For it is impossible to renew again to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift and became sharers of the Holy Spirit,

Ground of the warningγάργάρ grounds the urgency of advancing: standing still is perilous because there is a point beyond recovery. The decisive turn (apodosis of the warning)καίThe final participle παραπεσόντας delivers the hinge — 'and then fell away.' Only now does the infinitive ἀνακαινίζειν complete Ἀδύνατον of v.4: to renew such people again is impossible. The two present participles give the reason: such a fall amounts to re-crucifying and publicly disgracing the Son of God.
